I’m in my final year, what do I do next?

Christmas is springing upon us, assignments are getting on top of us, and you only have 6 months left at University. But what is your next step? If you’re in the same position as me and are still thinking about what to do after University, here are a few options to help you get started:

An Internship

Internships are a great way to get paid and learn on the job. If you’re feeling that you have all the knowledge in your subject area, however haven’t had much practical experience due to sitting in lectures, then an internship is for you.

They are a great way to gain ‘hands on’ experience, and employers are determined to teach you knowledge and skills to help you land that dream job after the intern finishes.

For great Internships, sign up to TARGETjobs, Inspiringterns and your local university job website.

A Graduate Scheme

There are lots of graduate schemes available after University. Here are a list of the top graduate companies to work for, based entirely on employee feedback.

  1. Microsoft
  2. National grid
  3. Swiss Reinsurance company
  4. NCC Group
  5.  TK Max

Other companies include Expedia.com, Vodafone, UniLever and HSBC.

Postgraduate study

Want to learn more in your subject area? Do you need an additional qualification to land the job of your dreams? Then postgraduate study is for you. Jobs such as Law and teaching require additional study, however some don’t.

If you want to study your subject in more detail and enhance your career opportunities, then you’re doing it for the right reason. But if you aren’t ready to leave University and want to enjoy the student life for longer, you’re doing it for the wrong reason.

Do plenty of research into your dream job and talk to career advisors at University to see what options are available for you.
